Telling a youth athlete to “be confident” rarely teaches her what confidence actually looks like.

But when she reads about another player missing a shot, feeling pressure, hesitating or worrying about making a mistake, something changes.

She can recognise herself without feeling like the lesson is about her.

That creates an opportunity to talk about what happened, what the player was thinking and what she might do next time.
